I have seen this argument kicking off around the blogosphere and have stayed out of the ring as I hope it doesn't apply to me.

If I ever wish to try a product I will email the PR directly and give them my reasons for doing so, I am perfectly happy to talk hits, stats and any figures they may require. I also am very aware that I may not be the blog they were looking for.

Personally I find it very rude to hear of people asking 'Give me give me' and it would rile me too.
I hope my email approach hasn't ever upset anyone as it certainly wasn't intended to
Interesting post, thanks

I have read most of these blogger/blagger posts with great interest as I am a Mummy Review Blogger. My blog has been running in total for about a year and I have built up some great relationships with PR companies over this time. It's good to see that we aren't all tarred with the same brush and that there are lots of people that understand and appreciate the time and effort we take to write about products, whether it be a jar of baby food or an expensive buggy. I have taken a lot of time to build my blog up to what it is today and try and bring as much of my daily life into my reviews as possible, hopefully making them interesting and amusing to read. Personally I think that there a few PRs who should look closer at blogs before they send out samples, there are an awful lot of bad examples out there, but if they are after publicity for their clients then is can be a relatively cheap way to do it!

The same here, I saw the link on Twitter and thought, well another PR talking about blaggers... It is nice to see there are other PR as well, who appreciate our work, and don't see all mummy bloggers as blaggers. @Kahanka

Its great to read a balanced view, I am a blogger, I love reviewing new products but I am not in it for the freebies. It takes a lot of work and time to do a decent product review and most bloggers are balancing blogging with working and/or looking after families. I do it because I enjoy it and its a great way to find out about new things and share them with my readers. If I like something I will use it again.
Maybe the problem arises because there are no guidelines in how bloggers should use Response Source?

Sorry for the copy and pasted comment that I posted on another site but here it is, I am in the process of getting ready to go out..thought I would post on here as well...

I am a blogger that has a big part of my blog doing reviews. I started my blog to record key events in my family life but due to a few health issues started almost as soon as I started my blog I have not been able to make my daughter's time that exciting. This is about to change and I have a second chance in life and I am going to make sure that my daughter has lots and lots of fun so my blog will be more about us and less about reviews. I am not going to stop doing reviews, I do enjoy them and I have quite a few to do (on products that I have been given but mostly the ones that I have paid for). I do contact PRs and companies (relevant to me and my family) and ask them whether they want to work with me and my blog..I never ever expect or demand that they offer me a sample product for review and I do not beg.

I also have helped quite a few companies by posting about them for free or adding an advertisement for them. I am not blogging to get freebies and I don't see it like that as I give a honest review ALWAYS! If something is good, I say it's good and if it is bad, then I make sure that is clear in my post. I have a section in my blog that states that I give an honest personal opinion at all times and I stick to that.

I hope what I have said doesn't make me a blagger. I certainly do not do what the example you have given.

Thanks for your comments, Claire. I think the key thing here is that decent bloggers don't want to be tarred with the same brush as those less scrupulous ones... and the same applies to us PRs.

I found it a cynical attempt by a company trying to up its profile. And whilst everyone is now talking about them, its for mostly the wrong reason. It was just bitchy beyond belief. Rude frankly. I really don't know what has been done to make them act in such a playground way, but I know quite a few bloggers who are angry, not just with the childish nature of the post but with Response Source. If RS doesn't want bloggers, then they should just say so.
For every PR firm such as Sorted, there are 10+ happy to work with bloggers. To generalise the way they have in that post, seemingly with the backing of RS, its just baffling. I don't think they have given Blogger's a bad name, but further opened the gap between Blogger's and PR companies and the relationship each would like to enjoy. Media is ever changing. Perhaps Sorted should think of that?

I'll be honest I came here from a Twitter link and expected to find another post about Mummy Bloggers just being a bunch of blaggers so it was refreshing to read your informed piece.

Glad to hear you have been working with the good ones. There are a few that are giving us all a bad name unfortunately.
